  12. Description:
  13.  
  14.   PROARC is a Prodos based utility designed to provide the
  15. user the ability to "archive" his 5.25 disks to a Prodos
  16. file in a compressed format. A secondary function gives the
  17. user the ability to read an input Prodos file and generate
  18. a cooresponding compressed output file. When archiving disk
  19. data, the resultant output file will be of the following
  20. format:
  21.        Filetype = $F7   Filename format = XXXX.DSK
  22.  
  23. When archiving a file, the resultant output file will be of
  24. the following format:
  25.  
  26.        Filetype = $F8   Filename format = XXXX.ARC
  27.  
  28. This output filename (XXXX) may contain up to 11 characters,
  29. not counting the 4 character filename extension (.DSK/.ARC).
  30. The extension may be entered manually by the user or the
  31. program will automatically append the proper extension for
  32. him.
  33.  
  34. These resultant files can then be placed on a mass-storage
  35. device for archival purposes or uploaded to your favorite
  36. BBS for disk/files transfers. The degree of compression
  37. realized from archiving a disk or file will vary according
  38. to the source data. In case of disk archival, the output
  39. disk file can be minimized if the source disk is not too
  40. fragmented. Fragmentation results from repeated file
  41. deletions and allocations. The user can "defragment" a
  42. normal DOS 3.3 or PRODOS disk by copying all the files off
  43. to a freshly formatted disk. The resulting defragmented disk
  44. is then archived by PROARC to achieve minimal output file
  45. size. Certain file types will realize significant file size
  46. reductions when archiving them, especially text files. In
  47. any case, any file size reductions will affect transfer
  48. times in BBS uploads/downloads.

  50. The user can then "de-archive" these resultant files back to
  51. their original forms. When converting a DISK file back to a
  52. floppy, a low-level format is automatically performed on the
  53. output disk. In the case of an archived file, the original
  54. file's attributes are internally saved so the unarchived
  55. file will be identical to the original file.
  56.  
  57. Minimum system:
  58.  
  59.  Any Apple II series computer with at least 64k and one 5.25
  60. floppy drive.
  61.  
  62. Some other features:
  63.  
  64.  If a Prodos compatible clock is detected in the system the
  65. time is displayed in 12-hour format at the menus.
  66.  
  67.  If no clock is availiable the ability to set the system
  68. DATE is provided so the user can at least date stamp his
  69. output files.
  70.  
  71.  Basic.system is protected by PROARC, therefore all normal
  72. Prodos commands are availiable to the user within PROARC.
  73.  
  74.  Floppy drives MUST be running out of Slot 6. Drive 1 or 2
  75. may be selected for DISK archival/unarchival.
  76.  
  77.  All file accesses follow the normal Prodos file hierarchy.
  78.  
  79.  At the menu screens, CONTROL-A will toggle upper/lower case
  80. screen output.

  82.  Program exits through Prodos's normal Quit code.
